Uncovering stone

This farmhouse was built 225 years ago. 50 years later an addition was added to move the kitchen to the back of the home and add another bedroom upstairs. 100 years later another addition was attached to the side of the kitchen.

When we decided to put our garden room alongside those 2 rooms I knew I didn’t want to cover up the exterior walls- I wanted them to be on display. I chose shiplap along the office exterior wall because it could be a siding material. Then I planned to peel off the stucco along the entire kitchen exterior walls. Normally you wouldn’t want to expose all that stone because they generally weren’t built to be out in the open. Since our wall was always going to be under a covered porch I was willing to go for it.

This process started indoors, in the new garden room and is just now wrapping up on the porch side of things.

Here’s what that looked like:

When it was outside, then became inside.

Peeling back the stucco. I started it and let the big guys finish.

Then comes the acid wash to clean the stones themselves.

Next up is pointing. My dad tried to convince me to go with grey.

That was not the right look, so we went back to the original plan: white joints… a beautiful picture frame to highlight the beauty of the stones.

And grand finale!
